Europe’s Scorching Summer

science

According to NASA Science, Western Europe has been hit by five heat waves this summer, with the latest pushing temperatures above forty degrees Celsius across a broad region. The heat broke records by wide margins, including a new May high in London and three consecutive daily records in Bordeaux, and preliminary reports link it to roughly ten thousand excess deaths. NASA's GEOS model animation, based on satellite data and atmospheric simulations, shows the daily maximum surface air temperature from May through mid-August, with the darkest red marking where it exceeded forty degrees. The agency highlights that Europe's limited air conditioning and aging population make it especially vulnerable, and researchers are mapping where rising heat will push the human body past its limits.
