Jeffco voters will consider $133 million in tax increases to raise teacher pay, repair schools
politics
Chalkbeat reports that Jefferson County voters will decide in November whether to approve two mill levy overrides totaling one hundred thirty-three million dollars. Measure five A would raise about seventy-three million dollars to boost salaries for teachers, principals and support staff and expand career‑technical education, while measure five B would allocate sixty million dollars for building repairs, technology upgrades and security improvements. If passed, property owners would see an increase of roughly forty‑two dollars per year for each one hundred thousand dollars of home value – about two hundred seventy‑three dollars annually on a six hundred fifty thousand dollar house. The district, which serves roughly seventy‑four thousand students, says the funding is needed to avoid further school closures, staff layoffs or salary freezes. The board warned that a defeat could force additional reductions for staff, families and school communities.
