According to NPR, about twenty U.S. airports use private security companies rather than the Transportation Security Administration to screen passengers and cargo for federal aviation safety compliance. It's a less visible side of airport operations—most travelers encounter the familiar TSA uniforms—but these airports have opted to outsource screening entirely to private firms.
