Hacking A Cat Litter Box

A cat owner has reverse engineered the Litter Robot 4 to avoid using the manufacturer's cloud services. As Hackaday tells it, Joseph DiGiovanni replaced the device's connectivity firmware with a custom version based on ESPHome, allowing the self-cleaning litter box to integrate directly with Home Assistant. By isolating the WiFi-enabled microcontroller from the hardware's core safety controls, he was able to automate the device without risking its mechanical functionality.
