Amin Mughal taught Pakistan’s Left and media to disagree without falling apart

Pakistani scholar and journalist Amin Mughal has died in London at age eighty-six, on August 12th. Dawn reports that Mughal spent decades linking the disparate strands of Pakistan's Left — organizers, dissident soldiers, journalists and language scholars — helping a fractured movement understand itself. He was jailed alongside fellow editors Mazhar Ali Khan and I.A. Rehman in 1981 after a state crackdown on their weekly, Viewpoint, which kept publishing even while its editors sat in cells. As Dawn tells it, colleagues remember him less for any single body of work than for the connections he built between generations of dissidents, journalists and scholars who might never otherwise have found common ground.
