Scientists have discovered a new peptide antibiotic in soil that fights bacteria using an entirely novel mechanism. According to io9, when researchers tested the compound against antibiotic-resistant strains, the results were remarkable: only one bacterium in every hundred million survived. Because the antibiotic works differently from existing drugs, bacterial resistance would be extraordinarily difficult to develop.
