Why marine heat waves and acidification strike together

Phys.org reports that marine heat waves and extreme ocean acidification events are each damaging on their own, but when both hit at the same time, their effects can be amplified. The combined stress can be worse than the sum of its parts. Such overlapping events have been seen before, like the 2013-2015 'Blob' in the northeastern Pacific, which disrupted fisheries.
