5 women from GB successfully summit Spantik

Four women mountaineers from Gilgit-Baltistan — joined by a Romanian climber and a mountaineer from Punjab — reached the summit of Spantik Peak, a mountain just over seven thousand meters high, without the help of high-altitude porters, the Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed. Dawn reports the local climbers included Shama Baqir and Samana Rahim of Shimshal Valley, Zooni Aslam of Gulmit, and Zaiba Batool Shigri of Shigar, while Romanian climber Alexandra Visan completed the ascent while undergoing treatment for cancer. But as Dawn tells it, the summit push came around the same time climber Dr. Asma Mushtaq died while descending the mountain, and deteriorating weather has since stalled efforts to bring her body down, along with that of American climber Sarah Mallory Geis, who died on nearby Broad Peak.
