According to io9, scientists recently extracted genetic material that's 700,000 years old—from a rather unexpected source: frozen squirrel droppings. The preserved feces of Arctic ground squirrels contained DNA that's providing researchers with a rare window into ancient ecosystems and the creatures that inhabited them thousands of millennia ago.
