Alaska’s glaciers have a startling response to rising temperatures

science

Radar satellites monitoring over 3,000 Alaskan glaciers have revealed an acute sensitivity to warming. According to new research, every degree Celsius of summer temperature increase extends glacier melting by roughly three weeks. Heat waves worsen the impact: intense warming can strip away up to 28 percent of protective snow cover, exposing ice much sooner and accelerating overall ice loss. ScienceDaily reports these findings demonstrate how rapidly climate change is reshaping the Arctic.
