Citations Needed: Magic Encyclopedias to Save the World

tech

According to LessWrong, the Future of Life Institute is running a competition to develop AI methods for building trustworthy knowledge bases. The vision: comprehensive encyclopedias where every claim is traced to its source, supporting evidence, and competing viewpoints—all instantly comparable, deeper research on demand. It's ambitious given today's gaps: Wikipedia has massive blind spots on emerging topics, and AI search tools remain unreliable. But the stakes justify the effort. Knowledge infrastructure matters profoundly for functioning societies—journalism, science, policy all depend on it. We need better systems now, as we navigate challenges in AI, automation, and biotechnology. Current institutions are failing: academia chases publication metrics, media maximizes clicks, and social platforms amplify misinformation. More rigorous epistemic foundations could be the key to clearer thinking when it matters most.
