Mermaid Tale Trail in Brooksville, Florida
entertainment
Hernando County, Florida has become an unlikely outdoor gallery. The Mermaid Tale Trail scatters more than 35 fiberglass mermaids across towns like Brooksville and Weeki Wachee, each one hand-painted by local artists into wildly different characters—some depicting Florida wildlife, others diving into fantasy and psychedelic art. According to Atlas Obscura, the project launched to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, famous since 1947 for its underground mermaid shows. Visitors follow maps through overlooked corners of the county, turning the trail into part road trip, part treasure hunt. All the mermaids start from the same fiberglass mold—cast from a former performer's face—but local artists have transformed them into everything from folklore scenes to purely imaginative creations.
