According to Boing Boing, Valve is discontinuing physical Steam gift cards to curb their use in advance-fee scams. For years, fraudsters have asked victims to purchase cards as supposed proof of funds before releasing money. With digital distribution now the norm, physical cards had become almost exclusively a tool for scammers—making them an easy target for removal. Valve's decision eliminates what was essentially the format's only remaining function.
