Surplus: for massive public good

According to LessWrong, Manifund and Mox are launching Surplus, a twelve-week startup incubator for founders building software to address artificial intelligence and public coordination challenges. The program provides $100,000 in seed funding, San Francisco office space, weekly mentorship, and a peer cohort of roughly ten founders aligned around AI safety and human flourishing.
Surplus is particularly interested in three categories: AI tools for fact-checking and epistemic resilience; public websites that translate complex AI topics for broader audiences; and community platforms—job boards, funding networks, research forums—serving the AI safety and effective altruism communities.
Founders can apply through June 24th. Selected participants spend two weeks on cofounder matching, then ten weeks in structured mentorship before pitching to investors and philanthropic funders at a Demo Day in October.
