Scoop: ICE detention numbers slip
politics
According to Axios, ICE's detention population has declined to 58,000 daily detainees, down from a January peak of nearly 72,000, leaving newly expanded facilities with excess capacity. The agency invested 38 billion dollars in detention expansion early in Trump's second term, banking on sustained high enforcement. However, the administration recently pulled back on aggressive city-wide enforcement operations. While current detention numbers remain elevated compared to the Biden era, they fall well short of the White House goal of 3,000 daily arrests.
