Trump's pending Iran deal is bitter pill for Netanyahu

politics

According to Axios, President Trump is preparing to sign an Iran deal—much to Netanyahu's dismay. Trump called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week to announce the deal would be signed within days, a major departure from Netanyahu's original hopes of using the conflict to trigger regime change in Tehran. Netanyahu's response was restrained; officials said he realized he couldn't block Trump. But privately, Israeli officials harbor deep skepticism: they fear Iran could stall nuclear negotiations without making real concessions, and worry a ceasefire clause will hamper their operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. For Netanyahu, diplomatically sidelined by his own patron just months before elections, it's a significant political and strategic setback.
