White students now make up less than half of all Americans enrolled in school

White students have now dipped below half of America's enrolled student body, according to new Census data analyzed by Axios. Over the past two decades, white non-Hispanic enrollment fell by 10 million while Latino enrollment nearly doubled, rising to nearly a quarter of all students. The shift reflects broader demographic trends—lower birth rates among white Americans, immigration, and population growth in other groups. But the milestone masks deeper concerns: Hispanic three- and four-year-olds enroll in pre-K at the lowest rate of any major group, and college completion gaps remain stark. For schools already grappling with teacher shortages and reading-proficiency declines, the coming decade will test whether they can serve a more diverse student body equitably.
