How to Suffer Less

other

According to Gordon Seidoh Worley on LessWrong, much of our suffering is self-inflicted—born from the desire to be someone other than who we are. Worley proposes three complementary practices to address this: awakening to the true nature of self, cultivating genuine compassion, and breaking free from automatic habits that keep us disconnected from reality. In practical terms, Worley recommends: surrounding yourself with supportive friends, meditating for at least 30 minutes daily, studying your own patterns and triggers to understand what drives you, and learning to truly live in your body rather than treating it as a vehicle you're piloting remotely from inside your head. The central insight is that suffering often comes not from external hardship, but from mental habits and disconnection from the present moment. By changing those internal patterns, Worley argues, genuine freedom becomes accessible.
