According to Boing Boing, the Feast of the Ass was a medieval Christian celebration held each January 14th to honor the donkey that carried the Holy Family into Egypt. Children would ride a real donkey through town to the church, where it would stand beside the altar during the sermon—mixing livestock management with liturgy.
