Japanese officers cannibalized four American POWs on a Pacific island in 1944
world
In September 1944, nine American pilots were shot down over Chichijima in the Bonin chain during bombing raids. Eight were captured; the ninth, future president George H.W. Bush, evaded. According to Boing Boing, four of the captured airmen—Lloyd Woellhof, Grady York, James Dye, and Glenn Frazier Jr.—were killed and cannibalized by Japanese military officers during their captivity. The incident stands as one of the documented war crimes from the Pacific Theater of World War II.
