OpenAI Just Filed For Its IPO. The Real Story Isn't The Trillion Dollars.

ai

OpenAI just filed for its IPO, but the trillion-dollar headline misses the actual story. What matters isn't which lab has the better model—it's who owns the application layer above it. As token costs fall and intelligence becomes commoditized, value shifts upstream to builders who own what Nate B Jones calls 'the harness'—the integration work, business logic, and context baked into a product. A model is a rented commodity. The harness is a moat. For operators, the message is unambiguous: own your harness or face commoditization. The leverage in AI doesn't flow to whoever rents tokens. It flows to whoever builds the work that uses them.
