How does congressmember use AI?

ai

According to research by Ilyass Mofaddel on LessWrong, congressional speeches show mounting signs of AI assistance. Mofaddel analyzed a decade of House and Senate remarks, building a corpus of linguistic markers that typically appear in AI-generated text—words like 'unwavering' and 'testament' that are suspiciously overused. The analysis reveals statistically significant increases in these markers, particularly in the House. The AI usage clusters in two distinct contexts: one-minute speeches that honor local figures and community members, where the language is remarkably formulaic across different speakers and subjects; and legislative speeches defending policy proposals. Interestingly, the prevalence of these markers dipped in 2025, possibly because the language models themselves have evolved. The pattern suggests that AI drafting has become routine in congressional communications—efficient, perhaps, but increasingly interchangeable.
