U.S.-Iran deal to end war "now in place": Pakistani PM
world
The United States and Iran have declared an end to 107 days of war, according to Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with President Trump confirming the agreement on Sunday. The deal is expected to be formally signed Friday in Switzerland, following electronic signing over the weekend. Under the accord, both countries have committed to a 60-day ceasefire and agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—a critical shipping corridor that before the war handled roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. The blockade choking the strait has been a major driver of global energy prices. The agreement also includes an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, despite last-minute tensions when Israeli forces struck Beirut targets hours before the signing was announced. During the 60-day window, the U.S. and Iran will launch technical negotiations on Iran's uranium enrichment and disposal of highly enriched stockpiles. Sanctions relief and access to frozen Iranian funds will be contingent on progress. However, experts caution that mine-clearing and infrastructure repairs may delay an immediate return to full shipping volumes, and the nuclear issues themselves may prove harder to resolve than the ceasefire itself.
