Violent attacks on schools, pupils and staff around the world up by 40%, says study

A major new study shows violent attacks on schools have surged 40 percent globally. According to the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack, more than 8,500 incidents were recorded in 2024 and 2025 across 83 countries, resulting in over 10,600 students and staff killed, injured, abducted, or arrested. The hardest-hit areas include Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Palestine, and Ukraine—many facing active conflict or severe political instability.
