In 1942, a peculiar mystery unfolded over San Francisco Bay. A Navy blimp designated L-8, crewed by Lieutenant Ernest DeWitt Cody and Ensign Charles Adams, launched from Treasure Island for a routine antisubmarine patrol. Hours later, the blimp landed itself—engines still running, control cabin empty. The crew had vanished without a trace, leaving behind one of World War II's strangest unsolved disappearances. According to Boing Boing, the incident remains unexplained to this day.
