In December twenty twenty, Coleman ran a red light and struck a car carrying a family of five; Gabriela Andrade and Henry Saldana-Mejia were killed, while their three young daughters, buckled in the back seat, survived. Coleman pleaded guilty in twenty twenty-two to two counts of murder and was sentenced to twenty-one years to life, after meeting face to face with the victims' surviving family to hear their grief firsthand. Now incarcerated at the California Institution for Women, she co-facilitates Responsibly Driven, a self-help program for other DUI offenders, and credits therapy and Alcoholics Anonymous with helping her confront what happened. California sees more than thirteen hundred alcohol-related traffic deaths each year, and Coleman's case unfolds amid Governor Gavin Newsom's push for prison reforms centered on preparing incarcerated people for parole and reentry.
