Programming the ZX Spectrum’s bitmap display
tech
The ZX Spectrum, the iconic 1980s home computer, had a clever architectural sleight of hand. According to Adafruit's coverage of technical analysis by Michael Martin, the machine didn't actually have a dedicated text mode—it offered only raw bitmap access. The system ROM created the illusion of text by layering a character-oriented API on top. Developers could bypass that wrapper and directly manipulate the bitmap memory, giving the machine surprising flexibility for its era.
