Atacama Desert’s center dried out 20 million years earlier than previously thought — before the Andes formed

According to Live Science, scientists have revised the timeline for the Atacama Desert's formation. The center of this famously barren Chilean region dried out more than 40 million years ago — well before the Andes Mountains rose. This pushes back the desert's origins by 20 million years.
