New way of making espresso with ultrasound
science
According to researchers at UNSW Sydney, high-frequency sound waves could fundamentally change how we brew coffee. They've developed a method to make espresso-strength coffee using room-temperature water instead of boiling hot water—slashing energy consumption by up to 75 percent. The ultrasonic system creates rapid microscopic bubbles that act like tiny scrubbing brushes on coffee grounds, accelerating flavor extraction without any heat. In blind taste tests with regular coffee drinkers, the ultrasonic version was indistinguishable from traditionally brewed espresso. The breakthrough could be especially significant for large-scale industrial coffee beverage producers looking to cut both energy costs and brewing time.
