Maria Pía Bridge in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal
other
Porto's Maria Pia Bridge is a monument to an age of engineering ambition. According to Atlas Obscura, Gustave Eiffel designed this wrought-iron masterpiece in 1877—years before the Tower that would make him world-famous. At completion, its central arch spanned 160 meters, the longest iron arch in the world. The delicate lattice still commands attention today, suspended above the Douro River like a line drawn in the sky. Though railway traffic moved elsewhere in 1991, the bridge remains a testament to engineering that was both functional and sublime.
