Easy-to-use calculation tool estimates out-of-field neutron dose during proton therapy
science
Researchers have developed a Python-based tool that calculates the dose of stray neutrons produced during proton therapy treatment. While proton therapy delivers precise radiation to tumors, it also generates secondary neutrons that scatter beyond the treatment field. According to Physics World, this calculator helps medical physicists estimate out-of-field neutron dose anywhere in a treatment room using just the treatment plan, allowing facilities to better account for unwanted radiation exposure to surrounding tissues.
