Aurora Australis
science
On June fifth, astronauts aboard the International Space Station captured a breathtaking view of the aurora australis—Earth's southern lights—shimmering above the Indian Ocean southwest of Perth, Australia. From 271 miles high, the station provided a rare vantage point on this luminous dance of particles and magnetism. According to NASA, the display coincided with heightened solar activity, painting the atmosphere in vivid, shifting colors. It's a reminder that some of Earth's most spectacular phenomena are best appreciated from orbit.
