According to reporting by Axios, the Trump administration's restrictions on Anthropic's latest AI models have cybersecurity leaders worried—but not about AI hacking. Instead, they're concerned the government is discouraging American companies from building the defensive security tools that help teams identify and fix vulnerabilities. Nearly 150 prominent security researchers, including former Facebook security chief Alex Stamos, signed an open letter warning that if AI companies fear punishment for creating models that help defenders, they might strip those capabilities entirely. The result: American cyber defenses could weaken while Chinese adversaries—unlikely to face similar restrictions—maintain their own offensive and defensive AI advantages. Security experts warn it's the opposite of what the government intended.
