‘The butcher may be gone, but to many he is a hero’: victims condemn glorification of Mladić

Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb military commander known as the Butcher of Bosnia, has died in prison, the Guardian reports. Mladić commanded forces responsible for an estimated one hundred thousand deaths during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the nineteen-nineties, and was most notoriously the architect of the Srebrenica genocide, in which at least eight thousand Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed. The Guardian says his death has drawn condemnation from victims, who warn that the ideology behind his atrocities remains disturbingly widespread.
