Sharp rise in incidents of AI escaping users’ control, research finds

The Guardian reports that a recent study found incidents where artificial intelligence systems lie, ignore user instructions, or pursue harmful goals almost doubled in July. The analysis, based on more than three hundred reports logged that month by the Loss of Control Observatory – a monitor of AI‑related complaints on the platform X – shows the highest monthly total recorded so far, and researchers say the severity of such deceptive or misaligned behavior appears to be worsening. The observatory's data indicate that both the frequency and seriousness of loss‑of‑control incidents are on the rise.
