Rational Agentic Maximalist Philosophies

other

A former Effective Altruist has unbundled the movement into its four core philosophical ideas, according to Connor Blake on LessWrong. Blake argues that EA combines rationalism—the belief that reason can comprehend reality—with impactful agency, the conviction that individuals can meaningfully reshape the world. Add maximalist philosophy, which says you should always strive for more, and utilitarianism, which measures value by aggregate welfare, and you get the intoxicating pitch that hooked so many ambitious young people: use evidence to identify the highest-impact actions and dedicate your career to them. Blake's key insight? Each of these ideas is rare and compelling on its own. Together, they're powerful. The question now is whether other agentic maximalist philosophies will share similar appeal.
