Pentagon boasts of using AI to write reports mandated by Congress (1.5mil users)

The Pentagon is making a big bet on AI. According to Ars Technica, the Department of Defense has deployed generative AI tools—primarily Google Cloud's Gemini—to roughly 1.5 million personnel since December, with usage jumping from just 80,000 in six months. The efficiency gains are striking: Pentagon officials claim AI-generated congressional reports cut 200 hours of manual work down to five. But there's a catch. The military files over 1,400 congressionally mandated reports annually—a crucial oversight mechanism meant to ensure military accountability for taxpayer spending. And as law firms and consulting firms have already discovered, AI-generated content without rigorous human review tends to propagate errors and false claims. What's unclear is whether Pentagon reviewers are equipped to catch those mistakes before reports reach Congress.
