‘Popa’ Botnet Linked to Publicly-Traded Israeli Firm

tech

Security researchers have identified Popa, an Android botnet that has hijacked millions of consumer TV boxes over the past four years, according to Krebs on Security. The botnet redirected computing resources to enable advertising fraud, account takeovers, and data scraping at scale. This week, investigators traced the operation back to NetNut, a residential proxy service operated by Alarum Technologies, a publicly-traded Israeli company listed on Nasdaq. The discovery raises questions about corporate accountability and whether Alarum had visibility into how its proxy network was being used for fraud and identity theft.
