GigaPath-Flash and GigaTIME-Flash: Toward population-scale discovery with efficient pathology foundation models

ai

Microsoft Research Blog reports that the new Flash family of pathology foundation models—GigaPath‑Flash and GigaTIME‑Flash—drastically cut computational cost while keeping performance near that of their much larger predecessors. GigaPath‑Flash pairs a twenty‑two million‑parameter ViT‑S tile encoder with a twenty‑one million‑parameter slide encoder, achieving about fifty times less compute for whole‑slide analysis with only a three percent drop in accuracy. GigaTIME‑Flash replaces its original CNN backbone with the same efficient encoder, delivering roughly six times faster spatial proteomics predictions and about eight times lower memory usage, even improving results on out‑of‑distribution tissue types. Both models are released under the Apache two‑zero license as open‑weight research tools, with code and weights available on HuggingFace, and are not intended for clinical diagnosis or patient‑care decisions.
