Experts: Why carbon removal needs a ‘major scale up’ to return warming to 1.5C

science

According to Carbon Brief, more than two hundred sixty climate scientists convened in Milan this week to tackle a critical challenge: scaling up carbon removal technology. The consensus is clear — reducing emissions alone won't achieve the one-point-five degree Celsius target set by the Paris Climate Agreement. We also need to actively pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at scale. Right now, carbon removal remains fragmented, expensive, and limited. But researchers are emphatic: this technology is essential, not optional, for meeting climate goals. The road ahead requires enormous effort — building infrastructure, lowering costs, and deploying solutions globally. It's a monumental undertaking, but one that experts say we cannot afford to delay.
