Fewer Colorado schools are on the state’s watchlist for low performance, according to new ratings

Chalkbeat reports that Colorado’s Department of Education released preliminary school performance ratings on Monday, showing fewer schools on the state’s accountability clock for low performance. More than fifty schools, including Abraham Lincoln High in Denver and Highland Park Elementary in Pueblo, moved off the watchlist, while nearly two thirds of the state’s more than seventeen hundred schools earned the top green rating. About fifty‑five percent of the one hundred eighty‑four districts also earned a high rating, matching last year, with Denver Public Schools and Jeffco Public Schools both scoring green for a second year in a row. Only one district and thirty schools received the lowest red rating, a decline from the prior year, and the number of schools remaining on the clock fell to one hundred forty‑eight. The Education Commissioner said the progress is encouraging but many students still attend struggling schools, and the state will finalize the ratings later this fall after appeals are considered.
