According to Google's Android Developers Blog, Android seventeen is now officially available, marking a significant shift from operating system to what Google calls an 'intelligence system.' The release features deep AI integration, allowing apps to expose their capabilities to on-device AI agents and assistants like Gemini through a new AppFunctions API. For users and developers, Android seventeen requires apps to be truly adaptive — large-screen devices can no longer opt out of resizability or orientation changes. New multitasking features include App Bubbles, allowing any app to float freely, and desktop-style interactive Picture-in-Picture windows. The release enforces strict per-app memory limits, introduces generational garbage collection improvements, and shifts to a Compose-first development model, with traditional View components now in maintenance mode only. Privacy enhancements include expanded contact and photo pickers, a new eyedropper API, and delayed SMS OTP access. Media creators gain support for RAW fourteen image capture and new codec options. The system image is available now on supported Pixel devices, with beta versions on partner phones from OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and others.
