White Cube in Liège, Belgium

entertainment

In Liège, Belgium, brothers Stephan and Georges Uhoda have turned a storefront window into an unconventional art gallery. For over fifty years, they've collected contemporary works—buying only what moves them, regardless of style or period. In twenty-nineteen, as part of a city initiative to revitalize downtown with art in vacant shop windows, they began displaying their collection. Three years later, they found a permanent home on Rue Saint-Paul, calling it the White Cube. Now anyone walking past can encounter gallery-quality contemporary art, completely free, updated every two to eight weeks. According to Atlas Obscura, this shop-window gallery—funded by a private collection with no reported equivalent—has achieved something rare: making serious art accessible without a ticket or membership.
