There Are No Instances in ATProto

tech

According to Dan Abramov's blog, ATProto—the technology behind Bluesky—inverts the federated social media model that Mastodon popularized. Instead of each server running the same app, ATProto splits hosting and apps: your data lives where you choose, and multiple independent applications pull from the entire network. Abramov compares it to the golden age of blogs and feed readers—separate producers and aggregators, no central coupling. The payoff: you can migrate your hosting, try new apps or build your own, without the restrictive 'instance identity' problem that locks Mastodon users in place.
