Bees view the world in surprisingly different ways – understanding this could inspire new technology

The Conversation reports that a new study comparing the eyes of solitary bees with the well‑known honeybee drone found several solitary species match or exceed the drone’s visual sharpness. Bees are essential pollinators for many crops worldwide, and researchers measured electrical responses from individual photoreceptors using glass microelectrodes, discovering that the Australian blue‑banded bee achieves similar sensitivity without the drone’s large lenses, instead relying on a different mix of optical design and tiny “pixels.” The authors suggest that these diverse natural solutions could inspire compact visual sensors for cameras, autonomous robots and drones. They warn that declining bee diversity threatens the loss of these evolutionary innovations, underscoring the need to protect pollinator species.
