smolutils: like coreutils but smaller
dev_tools
Embedded systems developer Daniel Palmer has released smolutils, a lightweight alternative to standard Unix utilities designed for memory-constrained hardware. On nommu systems—platforms without virtual memory—every running process loads its own copy of system libraries, consuming RAM quickly. Even busybox, the minimal utility collection, often exceeds available memory. Smolutils solves this by creating genuinely minimal command-line tools for resource-limited environments. According to the Adafruit Blog, the project opens new possibilities for developers targeting platforms with severe memory budgets.
