'We had to get out of the way': The backlash over delivery robots

tech

According to the BBC, autonomous delivery robots are becoming a common sight on city sidewalks worldwide, but residents in multiple cities are pushing back. In Chicago, a local activist launched a petition after finding himself and his family dodging the machines on sidewalks, and it's gathered over four thousand signatures calling for safety testing before continued deployment. San Francisco limited robot access to quieter neighborhoods, while Toronto and Chicago have enacted localized bans. Similar concerns are emerging in Glendale, California, where a council member reported witnessing a stand-off between a robot and an elderly pedestrian. While operators claim the robots are safe and cut traffic and emissions, residents report collisions, injuries, and emergency vehicle blockages. A UK trade union warns of job losses as analysts predict over two point one million delivery robots worldwide by twenty thirty-four. The regulatory landscape remains fragmented: some countries like South Korea and Japan have taken a permissive approach, while others are considering restrictions. As one Chicago activist observed, even if change feels inevitable, communities can still choose what kind of future they accept.
