Decision not to jail two teenagers for rape was wrong, court of appeal rules

politics

According to The Guardian, Britain's court of appeal has ruled that a trial judge's decision not to impose custodial sentences on teenage boys convicted of rape was legally erroneous. The judge had instead handed down youth rehabilitation orders. The ruling came after the attorney general, Richard Hermer, referred the case following a national outcry over the original sentencing. The court of appeal found that the sentences given to the defendants—identified as X, Y, and Z—were unduly lenient.
