After the Apollo moon landing, President Nixon had NASA create two hundred fifty commemorative plaques—each containing four tiny specks of moon dust and a flag that had flown to the moon. In nineteen seventy, Cyprus received one as a historic gift, along with every other nation and all fifty U.S. states. But when a military coup toppled Cyprus's government, the plaque vanished without a trace. According to Boing Boing, this extraordinary piece of space history has never been recovered.
