The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has launched an ambitious decade-long mission to map the southern sky. According to Live Science, the facility is beginning its Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which will photograph the entire region repeatedly over the next ten years, creating a detailed movie of the cosmos. Chief Scientist Tony Tyson says the discoveries ahead are virtually guaranteed. The survey could reveal unknown asteroids, unveil the nature of dark matter, and transform our understanding of the universe's expansion. But there's a catch: Tyson warns that increasing numbers of bright satellites orbiting Earth could severely hamper image quality. So while a billion-dollar telescope prepares to unlock cosmic secrets, the very technology we've sent into orbit threatens to get in the way.
